Natural Watershed Management Initiatives

KIRDTI is a non-profit voluntary organization, which has been working for the welfare of the primitive tribes (PVTG), in Keonjhar district since 1989-90. This tribal community lives below the poverty line.....

KIRDTI is working to ensure their food security. Programs are being implemented to combat drought-related losses due to climate change. Various steps have been taken to invest in the agricultural sector by utilizing the ancient natural water resources. With the aim of developing a comprehensive greenfield water infrastructure system through better water management the construction of Gaviyan has created the potential to ensure sustainable water management for the region Similarly, efforts are being made to increase groundwater levels by controlling the speed of water and preventing erosion of the soil by constructing loose boulder check dam, LBCD, and loose boulder structure, L B S, in various places. By constructing various Water Harvesting Structures, agricultural production has been increased by collecting and storing rainwater, recharging groundwater and managing water permanently during dry periods. These Water Harvesting Structures, WHSs, are also used as flash flood control during rainy seasons.The profile of this project of KIRDTI, today, has brought sustainability in agricultural production in all these areas. The beneficiaries have been able to bring stability to their food security by cultivating pulses, oilseeds and many types of vegetables along with paddy and have been able to transform their economic status by marketing the produced goods.

The tribals living in this district are very weak in socio-economic aspects. They are not aware of education and health at all...

By focusing on such a sensitive issue, KIRDTI is continuing its efforts to educate these tribes. Education is a fundamental right of a human being. Emphasizing this, KIRDTI has started adult education Centre with the aim of making illiterate people literate. Illiterate adults are getting the opportunity to get educated in this education center. Due to this, they are able to take a special place in the society. Similarly, KIRDTI has started Primary Education Centers with an emphasis on primary education. Children from economically weaker families usually drop out Children. KIRDTI is making efforts to provide primary education to these dropout children and to continue their education with the help of Primary Education Centers. Education has a positive impact on individuals, societies, and economies. It can improve health, promote social mobility, and help people achieve their full potential. Through this program of KIRDTI, illiterate adults are becoming literate and are occupying a special place in society. Primary education is not only helping children regain their fundamental right but also developing the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in life. In other words, it is creating opportunities for children to become self-reliant in the future.

various steps have been taken by a non-profit organization KIRDTI. Efforts are being made to make their food security sustainable through various projects. After the project started, on a priority basis, farmers were trained on how to produce more crops at lower cost. To protect crops from the effects of drought, natural resource water management was strengthened and farmlands were irrigated. Eco-friendly seeds used by our ancestors were restored and provided to farmers. For pest control, it was advised to make bio paste from materials available in their area that are easy to make and low in cost. This also saved the environment from chemical-related damage. All these measures have significantly increased agricultural production in these areas. The beneficiaries have been able to produce large quantities of vegetables, pulses, oilseeds along with paddy to meet their needs. As a result, they have been able to sustain their food security through nutritious food and increase their household income by selling the surplus produce. Another initiative of KIRDTI to improve long-term livelihoods is to create cashew orchards. Similarly, mango trees have been provided and beneficiaries have been advised to plant them in their backyards. These trees will be a source of income for the beneficiaries in the long term in the future.

are being made to make young women self-reliant by providing training in sewing. There is a growing interest among young women to join this project. After completing training from here, many young women have been able to take up sewing as their profession and improve their livelihoods. Similarly, special driving training is being given to the youth. After learning driving, many young boys have already got jobs in various places. This initiative by KIRDTI has set an example for other youth in the district.

Since there are facilities for silkworm farming in the nearby forests, the local residents are earning some income by cultivating silkworms. However, due to lack of proper technology, silkworm production has not been as expected. With the aim of increasing the income of silkworm farmers, their skills were enhanced by providing them with appropriate training. In order to increase production, high-quality silkworms seed are being provided to the beneficiaries. As a result, silkworm production has increased significantly and the income of silkworm farmers has increased.
